Identify how the panel is made

“3D panel” describes a surface appearance, not one material or manufacturing process. A panel may be routed, pressed, moulded or assembled from separate elements. Ask for the substrate, surface finish and method of forming the pattern before selecting its installation detail.

For a routed board, distinguish total board thickness from relief depth and the material remaining beneath the deepest cut. For an applied or moulded face, record the face and backing construction separately. These details are more useful than a single nominal thickness.

Draw the pattern across the whole wall

Set out panel joints, pattern direction, starts and stops, corners, sockets and access panels. A flute can look regular on an individual sample but become visibly interrupted at a poorly placed joint. Use an elevation to review the repeat across the proposed panel sizes.

Review a representative sample under the intended lighting. Grazing light can emphasise differences in texture, alignment and finish. Specify the appearance that needs to be controlled, then agree achievable dimensions and tolerances with the manufacturer rather than copying a generic relief-depth tolerance.

Coordinate the substrate and fixing system

The fixing detail needs the panel weight, wall construction, support arrangement and access requirements. Specify whether fixings are visible, concealed or adhesive-based, and obtain instructions for the selected panel system. Do not infer support spacing or allowable span from texture depth alone.

Wood-based panels need moisture conditions, movement allowance and edge protection considered as part of the assembly. EGGER’s decorative-board processing instructions, for example, distinguish fixing methods and address expansion allowance. Their details apply to the named products; a different substrate needs its own instructions.

Resolve edges, maintenance and required documents

Identify every visible cut edge and how the face finish returns at the perimeter, corners and openings. Check that cleaning access is practical in the recesses. Request care instructions for the specific coating and substrate, especially where the panel is near water or frequent cleaning.

For an enquiry, send the wall elevation, panel size limits, substrate preference, colour or finish reference and fixing concept. If the project requires evidence of fire behaviour or emissions, identify the requirement and review documents for the actual panel assembly offered.
